News from Tobar an Dualchais/
Kist o Riches

This is the first Email bulletin from Tobar an Dualchais/ Kist o Riches. It will be circulated on a bi-monthly basis and is aimed at keeping you up-to-date with the latest developments in this hugely exciting and important project.

Aims of the project

Tobar an Dualchais/Kist o Riches is based at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, the Gaelic college in Skye, and is aimed at preserving, digitising and making available online over 12,000 hours of audio recordings in Gaelic and Scots. This phase of the project started in January 2006 and will run for five years.

Tobar an Dualchais ready to go!

As many of you will know, the project was originally approved by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) in 2003. Because of the delay in the start of the project, plans had to be revised and re-submitted to the Heritage Lottery Fund before the work could really begin. However, the project received the formal go-ahead from HLF at the end of March. We are now ready to go!

Funding update

Due to the delay in the start of the project, costs will be substantially higher than originally estimated. However, all existing funders have now re-confirmed their commitment to the project and two funders, Bòrd na Gàidhlig and Seirbheis nam Meadhanan Gàidhlig, have increased their contributions. Bòrd na Gàidhlig agreed an additional sum of £20,000 to be paid from 2005-6 funding while Seirbheis nam Meadhanan Gàidhlig has agreed an additional £20,000 over the life of the project.

We are very grateful to all funders for their commitment to the project over the years and for their continuing support.
