Funding

We received a welcome funding boost in March with the news that Bòrd na Gàidhlig had allocated £14,250 in end of year funding to Tobar an Dualchais projects. Some of the money has been spent on training for digitisers and cataloguers and the remainder is going towards a specialist cataloguing application being written by EDINA at the University of Edinburgh.  We are very grateful to Bòrd na Gàidhlig for this additional assistance.

New Appointments

The Tobar an Dualchais team continues to grow, with several new appointments since the last newsletter.

The Uist office is now fully staffed. Colin Gordon, Julie Lewis and Catriona Scott have all recently joined the team there.

Colin has taken on the post of Data Editor and will be responsible for checking data received from cataloguers. He is a recent graduate of Sabhal Mòr Ostaig and has a keen interest in Gaelic language and music, especially piping.  Julie and Catriona form the Uist digitising team. Julie is a graduate in Computer Science and has worked with archives in the past. She is also a musician with a special interest in Gaelic song. Catriona previously held an administrative post with Comhairle nan Eilean Siar. She has been involved in various community projects in South Uist and has taught Gaelic evening classes there for a number of years.

A team of Gaelic cataloguers has also started work in the Western Isles. They are William MacDonald (from North Uist) and Murdo MacDonald and Maggie Smith (both from Lewis). William was previously Head Teacher of Lioncleit School, and has had a lifelong interest in oral history. He began recording and collecting songs and stories when he was a student and has maintained his interest ever since. Murdo has spent a number of years cataloguing the National Trust’s Canna collection and is particularly well-versed in these materials.  Maggie has been working on the Hebridean Connections website as a cataloguer and is also involved in many projects in her own community. William, Murdo and Maggie are currently trying out processes and assisting with the development of guidance for cataloguers.

Elsie Maclean has been appointed Marketing Officer and will be working part-time from her home in Inverness. Elsie was previously Assistant Head of Lifelong Learning at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig and has been involved in marketing for several years. Contact Elsie on 01463 795300

Other Vacancies

Interviews have been taking place for vacancies in the Edinburgh team and for Scots cataloguers. These posts attracted a good deal of interest, with the Scots cataloguers’ posts being particularly popular. Appointments will be announced soon.
